I finally had time today to work on the Tic-Tac-Toe Haiku game for kids! My other haiku games were designed with grown-up players in mind, but I really want to find a good haiku game for kids, and I think this Tic-Tac-Toe is going to work. It's basically a variation on my bingo-features game, but with just a 3x3 grid (like in tic-tac-toe) instead of a 5x5 grid. That means playing with just 9 features at a time, which is more do-able for kids... and it meant I got to group the features into different categories. As a result, it is actually 5 different haiku games for kids because there are 5 different categories with 9 features each. I tried to make the features very simple, and when you add up all those features (45 total), the kids who play all 5 games will actually be haiku experts, with lots of haiku knowledge they can use to write their own haiku too.
I've still got work to do in terms of developing the Living Haiku Anthology selection of poems that would work for kids and recommending kids' haiku books at the Internet Archive, but other than that, I think this is ready for Liz to start test-playing with her niece and nephew. If anybody else tries this out with some children, let me know how it goes! Here's all the information about how to play: Tic-Tac-Toe Haiku for Kids.
And below is a sample game sheet. I'll update this post as the project evolves!
